The Origins of Planets Weinberger, Alycia Astronomers have discovered a huge variety of exoplanetary systems around other stars, many very different from the architecture of our own solar system. To understand how these planets form, we have to study planetary birthplaces in circumstellar disks of dust and gas around young stars. I will show observations of the composition and structure of these disks made with a variety of space and ground-based telescopes and techniques. Even in very young disks, we can see evidence for planet formation and find some of the crucial ingredients for habitability. Presentation delivered by Alycia Weinberger, staff astronomer, the Carnegie Institute of Washington Department of Terrestrial Magnetism, on November 5, 2013 at Haverford College, KINSC, Hilles 109.
